Effect of Several Diuretics on the Renal Function of the Chicken

Abstract
In view of the fact that the chicken possesses a short loops of Henle and less developed kidney markedly different from those of mammals in concentrating and diluting mechanisms of urine, the actions of several diuretics was investigated in this species,
After water diuresis induced by the intravenous infusion, urine was collected from both side ureters cannulated with polyethylene tube and blood samples were obtained from brachial artery.
The obtained results were summarized as follows ;
1. Hyc rochlorothiazide, mersalyl, acetazolamide and amiloride did not induce any hemodynamic changes and it showed that diuretic responses in the chicken resulted from its inhibitory action of reabsorption of electrolytes in the tubule.
2. Hydrochlorothiazide increased the sodium and potassium excreted amount in the chicken.
3. Mersalyl, the most potent diuretic in the mammals, did not induce diuresis, natriuresis, or kaluresis in the chicken,
4. Acetazolamide, carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, increased the sodium and potassium excreted amount in the chicken,
5. Amiloride, a K-sparing diuretic, decreased the potassium excreted amount and increased the sodium excreted amount as those of mammals.
